My Equipment
Many people think that one has to be equipped with very long lenses and have professional gear to take decent images, but that is not necessarily the case, especially in southern Africa where I do most of my shooting. The private concession areas in northern Botswana, where I do most of my guiding, actually allow limited off-road driving, and this means that it is often possible to make very close approaches to some of the wildlife. This is of great benefit for wildlife photography. Bearing this in mind, photographic equipment that has a focal reach of around 300mm to 500mm is usually adequate for most of the sightings, especially those of the larger mammals. Patience is of course another important piece of photographic equipment, and an under-rated one at that!
I use two camera bodies; they are both identical:
• Canon EOS 7D
My lens collection is made up of:
• Canon EF-L 16-35mm f2.8
• Canon EF-L 70-200mm f2.8 IS
• Canon EF-L 300mm f2.8 IS lens (my longest lens)
• Tamron 90mm f2.8 Macro lens
I make use of a carbon fibre Slik tripod and a Slik SBH 550 ball-head, especially when photographing landscapes, camps and room interiors, and macro subjects. I use quick-release brackets and lens mount plates made by Really Right Stuff.
I have two Canon EF extenders (also called teleconverters):
• 1.4x and 2x, but I hardly ever use them.
I process my images using Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop CS4.
